India Demands Trophy Handover
The Asia Cup 2025 winner’s trophy controversy continues as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally warned Mohsin Naqvi, head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). India has demanded that the trophy and winner’s medals be handed over without further delay. The BCCI has stated that if the matter is not resolved soon, it could be taken up with the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Trophy Presentation Fails
India won the Asia Cup by defeating Pakistan in a thrilling final, but the traditional trophy presentation did not take place. The Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who then kept the trophy and delayed its handover. This standoff has drawn widespread attention across the cricketing world
Naqvi Stands Firm
The BCCI has repeatedly contacted the ACC office in Dubai, requesting formal delivery of the trophy. Naqvi, however, insists that the handover must involve a player or captain of the Indian team and that the ceremony should take place either in India or at the ACC headquarters in Dubai. This has prevented a smooth resolution so far.
Support from Other Boards
During the ACC Annual General Meeting, India highlighted the issue and received backing from other member boards, including Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Despite this support, Naqvi has maintained his stance and has refused to apologise or hand over the trophy immediately.
Victory on Field, Trophy Pending
While India has won the tournament on the field, the physical trophy and medals remain with the ACC. The BCCI has emphasised that the trophy rightfully belongs to the Indian team and that withholding it undermines the spirit of the tournament.
ICC Arbitration Expected
The ACC has stated that it will follow the proper protocol, while Naqvi insists he acted within his authority. The issue is now expected to be discussed at the next ICC board meeting, where a formal resolution or directive may be issued. Until then, India’s Asia Cup victory remains without its official symbol of triumph.
