Harassment Incident in Indore
A few days after reports of molestation involving members of the Australian women’s cricket team in Indore, Ashleigh Gardner’s wife, Monica Wright, has shared a photo showing a police escort accompanying them to a café. The post, shared on her Instagram story, came amid heightened security for the visiting team during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
The incident reportedly took place last week when two Australian players were allegedly harassed by a man on a motorcycle while they were travelling from their hotel to a café on Khajrana Road. Police identified the accused as Aqeel Khan, who was arrested soon after the complaint was filed.
Gardner’s Wife Shares Police Escort Photo
Monica Wright’s Instagram story showed the couple sitting inside a car while two police officers on a motorbike rode ahead. She captioned the image, “Police escort to the café,” and tagged Gardner in the post — a quiet but clear message about the security arrangements now in place for the team.
According to the team’s security officer, Danny Simmons, the players immediately sent a distress message and shared their live location when the incident happened. “One of the players called me, crying, and told me what had happened,” Simmons said. The team quickly arranged for their safe return to the hotel.
Swift Police Action
Police officials at the MIG station in Indore registered an FIR and launched a coordinated search across five police stations — MIG, Khajrana, Vijay Nagar, Pardeshipura, and Kanadiya. Within six hours, the accused was located and arrested using CCTV footage and a motorcycle number recorded by a witness. Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed that the man had a criminal history. Authorities are also reviewing whether there were any lapses in the security plan.
Stronger Security Measures for Teams
The incident has caused concern among players and organisers during the ongoing Women’s World Cup. In response, security around team hotels, training venues, and match grounds has been tightened, especially in Navi Mumbai, where Australia is set to play the semi-final and final.
The photo shared by Wright highlights the extra precautions being taken to ensure the safety of the players. While the investigation continues, the prompt action by police has drawn both relief and renewed calls for stronger safety protocols for visiting athletes.
