India’s young batting star Shubman Gill has opened up about the recent team selection decision that left senior pacer Mohammed Shami out of the upcoming India vs South Africa Test series 2025. Gill said the move is part of a bigger plan by Team India to prepare for the future and give opportunities to emerging talents who can take Indian cricket forward in the coming years.

In his media interaction, Shubman Gill said that the selectors’ decision shows faith in the next generation. “We all know what Shami bhai has done for Indian cricket. But at the same time, it’s important to build bench strength for the future,” Gill explained.
The squad for the South Africa Tests includes several promising bowlers who have impressed in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). The two-match Test series in South Africa will begin later this year and will be part of the ongoing WTC 2025–27 cycle. Despite Mohammed Shami’s absence, Shubman Gill expressed confidence that the new-look pace attack will perform well on South African pitches known for pace and bounce.
“We are focused on fearless but smart cricket. Every player knows his role, and we’re preparing well as a team,” Gill said.
